On That Same Road

I'm sure October 20th was a hard day for anyone paying attention to Nigerian news. It was difficult to get anything done that painful Tuesday evening. I wrote this very short piece as I cried that night because I couldn't comprehend the heartless decisions of our government officials.

On That Same Road

On that same road we were hustling through the narrow lanes between the Lekki toll gate, turning a blind eye as we usually did to the corruption that slowly, yet painfully, depletes our nation.

The next day we were awakened by the police brutality that rampaged our land for years. The gross injustice and the unfathomable stories of the victims propelled our courage as we made our voices heard during peaceful protests at Lekki toll gate.

12 days later, that same road was lined with the blood of our new heroes.

And on that same road, the symbol of peace on our national flag was stained with its own people's blood.

But for our heroes who do not get to witness the fruits of their gallantry, we will not relent!
